Hebrews 1:3 (ESV) “He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of His nature, and He upholds the universe by the word of His power. After making purification for sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high.”

There are many misconceptions about who Jesus is. There are volumes written about Him, but we’ll try to address the basics while providing you some additional resources for further study if you’d like.

Jesus was not just a good man who lived 2,000 years ago. Many who fail to acknowledge His deity, recognize (as the historians do) that there was a man named Jesus who did a lot of great things for others, but they refuse to believe that the supernatural miracles (good works) He performed were by the power of God. The New Testament (specifically Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) are replete with historical accounts of Jesus’ miraculous work on earth.

The Bible teaches that Jesus was fully God and fully man (Philippians 2:5-11, Hebrews 2:5-18). He left His throne in heaven to humble Himself and become man, so that through His sinless life, willing death, and resurrection, He might pay the eternal punishment for our sins and provide a means for reconciliation to Him. He became our sacrifice so that through faith, we could be given new life- everlasting life- free from the eternal condemnation of our sins. As exciting as the miracles that Jesus performed are, the Old Testament is full of prophecies that were written 500-1,000 years before Jesus’ birth that address specific details concerning His birth, miracles, the betrayal of others, His death, and resurrection. Again, these weren’t generalities, they were very specific details that have all been proven true through the New Testament, and for those that don’t believe the Bible, they have also been documented through numerous other historical documents of that time.

The Bible says that the eternal life that Jesus provides is freely given to all who, through faith, believe. The Philippian Jailer supervising Paul and Silas inquired; “After he brought them out, he said, ‘Sirs, what must I do to be saved?’ And they said, ‘Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you shall be saved, you and your household.’ And they spoke the word of the Lord to him together with all who were in his house.” (Acts 16:30–32)

Romans also addresses how we might be saved, “If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved; for with the heart man believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.” (Rom. 10:9–10) Unlike any other religion in the world, Christianity is a relationship with Christ that is solely dependent on Christ alone for salvation- there is nothing that man can do to earn it.
